10 Years Later

Ten years ago today, my adolescent icon, Kurt Cobain committed suicide with a single gun shot wound to the head. Weapon in hand, Cobain's body lay in wait for three days before an electrician, who had reported to the house in the early morning hours, discovered it with his drivers license carefully laid out. Ever the considerate rock star, he had gone to greath lengths to make the identification process as easy as possible.

Nirvana's music, in particular Cobain's resonant, tortured voice and haunting lyrics, shook my seventh grade year in a way nothing had previously done. I found in their music a friend, a place that spoke the words I could not find and, in times, provided me with reason enough not to attempt to take my own life when my young mind could find no other. A man who wanted nothing more than to create, a man who begrudgingly accepted his role as single-handedly launching a new music revolution, suddenly became the spokesperson for my angst and the rest of a generation. And as quickly as I came upon this greatness, it was just as quickly taken from me
